Les Arches National Park contains one of the largest concentrations of natural sandstone arches in the world. The arches and numerous other extraordinary geologic features, such as spires, pinnacles, pedestals and balanced rocks, are highlighted in striking foreground and background views created by contrasting colors, landforms and textures.
The fanciful names at Arches National Park -Fiery Furnace, Three Gossips, Marching Men, Dark Angel- don’t do justice to the otherworldly rock formations they denote. Towers, domes, balanced rocks, and arches have been formed over millions of years of weathering and erosion, and the process continues, constantly reshaping this fantastical rock garden. Plants at Arches are adapted to the hot, dry environment of the high desert, and the wildlife here is mostly nocturnal. Native Americans first lived on this land, leaving behind petroglyphs still visible today.
The park is 76,519 acres in size. |
